1001 Peeps PDQ* Summer Throw

It's Friday!  So that must mean a new 1001 Peeps Summer Camp project!  This week I'd like to share with you our 1001 Peeps PDQ (*Pretty Darn Quick) Summer Throw!  This 40"x60" lightweight throw is fast and easy with fringed seams and is great for those cool camp nights or for chasing the chill of too much air-conditioning!  Summer Camp isn't any fun without a Mail Call - so I'll tell you about that after the tutorial.  Let's get started.

Materials Needed:
Back:   2 yards, cut crosswise into (12) 6"xWOF strips
Front:   1/3 yard cuts of 6 fabrics, cut into (12) 6"xWOF strips
Thread to match your fabric - it WILL show
Sharp scissors

Before cutting

After cutting
This throw has no batting; the front and back are pieced together in a "quilt as you go" fashion with the seams on the OUTSIDE of the front using a 1/2" seam allowance.

1.  Lay out your front strips in the order you want them be in the finished throw.  You might want to label them 1-12, or just stack them in order.
2.  Pair each backing strip with a front strip WRONG sides together.  You should have 12 pairs.  If you are using a directional backing fabric, make sure your strips are all going in the same direction.

3. Lay out Strip #1 and Strip #2 as shown.  Notice that Strip #1 is wrong sides together with a backing strip, as is Strip #2.  Make sure the left side selveges are even.
4.  Pick up the pair of strips, placing them together with the backing fabrics face to face.  You should have 4 layers of fabric in this order - Strip #1, backing strip, backing strip, Strip #2.
5.  Sew all 4 layers together from left to right using a 1/2" seam.  Remember - the seam goes on the FRONT!

6.  Open out the sewn strip set and lay out Strip #3.
7.  Grab it the same way, and sew Strip #3 to Strip #2 just like you did before.

8.  Continue adding each strip set unti all 12 strip sets are sewn together.
9.  See how the right side of the throw is all uneven?  That's okay.  You didn't do it wrong.  All fabric widths are different.  We're going to take care of that right now.

Lay your throw on your cutting mat.  Trim off both sides of selvedges to make nice, clean, selvege-free edges.  No need to measure - just trim as straight as you can.
10.  Stitch a 1/2" all the way around the perimeter of the throw to secure all the layers.  You could use a decorative stitch here if you want.

11.  With your sharp scissors, snip all the seam allowances and the outer edge 3/8"-1/2" apart to make the fringe.  Be sure you don't snip the seam line stitching!
12.  Wash, dry, and watch your fringe "bloom"!  I washed mine with a load of towels to help it fringe even more.

Wasn't that easy?  Here's a few helpful hints?
  • Pressing each strip set (front to back, wrong sides together) before sewing will help the fabrics stick together so that there's less shifting as you sew.
  • ALWAYS make sure that you are looking at the newest FRONT SIDE STRIP as you sew.  If the backing fabric is on top, it's a boo-boo and your seam will be on the back instead of the front.

  • Don't have a 1/2" seam allowance marked on the throatplate of your sewing machine?  My not-inexpensive German machine didn't either, so I made a temporary seam guide using two business cards.  Mark a line 1/2" from the edge on one card.  Slip this card under your presser foot and drop the needle down on the line.  Place the second business card next to the one under your needle and tape that card onto the bed of yor machine.  Remove the card under the needle and voila!  Instant (and temporary) seam guide!
We hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.  You can find all of Peeps (Castle Peeps as well as 1001 Peeps) on our website.

I promised you a Mail Call, so here's the details.  Leave a comment with your favorite Summer Camp memory (or anything else you'd like to share), and we'll pick one winner at random to receive a special care package directly from Lizzy House containing a Fat Quarter set of the 1001 Peeps in the Basra Blue colorway!  Comments will be open until midnight, Thursday, July 21.  I'll return from my own Summer Camp on Monday, July 25th and select and announce a winner.

I'd love to see your project - feel free to post it on our Facebook page!  We love seeing everybody's projects!

Happy Sewing,
Susan

oh no - comment number one - that doesn't seem too lucky . . .
Anyway, my favorite summer camp memory is when I was working at a summer camp overseas and the children had never seen ice cream before. They wanted to take it home to show their family!

Love this fabric and the quilt is PDC (pretty darn cute) too.

I remember one year my cousin and I went to camp with so many bags that our family actually took pictures of our luggage. We were typical teenage girls!

So cute! I love that there is no batting so it will go really fast.

The only time I went to summer camp was with my girl scout troop. I was chosen to represent the troop in some type of pageant, where I dressed as "Miss Recycle". My dress was made from trash bags and had all sorts of recyclable things attached to it (mini cereal boxes, candy wrappers, etc.).

My favorite Summer camp memory was at Camp Bette Perot (Girl Scout Camp). We went down to the Corrals at night and I saw the Milky Way in all it's glory for the first time ever.

I can't wait to start this quilt. Have already thought of 3 different fabrics I'd like to use.

Favorite memory was when we learned how to make a drink out of an orange and a peppermint stick. It's so refreshing. Still do it ??? years later. =)

This quilt is so cute! And very easy!! I love that!
My favorite memory from camp is when we got to go to the fire pit at night and sing camp songs!
Thank you for this giveaway!

I always wanted to go to summer camp, but the only camp I ever went to was band camp. It was a lot of work, but it was always fun seeing my friends after being apart all summer!

LOVE this quilt! Super fun to make!
My favorite memory of summer camp was staying up with my friends until the wee hours and watch the stars huddled under blankets to keep warm! One year we even got to see a meteor shower! Awesome memories!

I never went to summer camp, but I do remember taking a knitting and crocheting class in summer school between 4th and 5th grades. I made a red, white, and blue scarf--wonder what ever happened to that scarf?.

This PDQ throw will be the perfect weight for up-front in the car while traveling. What a cute idea!

Church camp memory- The "dean" (the preacher from a nearby church) said he would call my parents if I didn't quit kissing this guy (I had met only 2 days before.) I didn't quit and he didn't call them. Looking back now, what was I thinking?
PS- That dean is now my parents mailman.

Well I only went to summer camp twice more than 30 years ago so it shouldn't be too hard to find a favorite memory...right?

I remember going snipe hunting in the middle of the night with our pillows...hahaha!

My only memory of summer camp was that my mom wouldn't let me GO to summer camp because she would miss me and my little sister too much!

I actually never went to summer camp, but I did go to a marine biology 2 week camp when I was in highschool. It was awesome and was where I learned to sail for the first time. Plus we got to learn survival measures in these super thick neoprene suits that you would wear in very cold water. It was scary and fun at the same time. Definitely not your typical camp activity.

I think the year that the creek between my campsight and the rest of the camp flooded stranding my troop of girls overnight has to be the most memorable. We never went camping overnight again.

MY favorite summer camp memory was lipsynching to "Material Girl" at a Drama Camp.

My favorite memory from summer camp is of the sweet letters my parents wrote to me. They described how much my dog missed me, which broke my heart and made me feel incredibly loved at the same time. I still have those letters, and keep them in our safe deposit box with other treasures.

Summer Camp? What is that? My Daddy is a blueberry farmer in New Jersey, there is nothing but blueberries (used to be other crops too) in the summer. They did however splurge one summer to send me to swimming lessons for 4 days I think...I must have been a handful that year! :) Thanks for the chance, love your quilt!

I never went to "summer camp" but from ages 8-15 I spent my summers with my aunt in Indiana - a 6 hour train ride away with a change of trains in Chicago. I went all by myself (there were no worries in those days)& my favorite memory is sitting in the train station in Chicago & watching all the people. Many would stop to chat & share their treats. there were lots of cute sailors!

I remember storing all the food that needed to be cold in the stream and thinking that was so awesome. I just love fringe-y quilts and this one is really cute. Little kids love fringe so I bet this would be a favorite at my house.

What a great quilt! Looks so bright and cheerful. I'm anxious to get my hands on some of this fabric. My memory is I had cut my foot a few days before camp but I was still allowed to go as long as I didn't get my foot wet. I went out in one of the canoes with a friend when a counselor swam up and started rocking the canoe. Ignoring my foot he rocked and tipped the canoe! I didn't know how to swim so here I was trying to raise my foot up and my head going down, head up and foot going down and arms flying about. He helped me to shore and was laughing! I was sooo upset. That was the last time I went to camp. oh and I still can't swim. Scared for life? When it comes to swimming ... Yes Haha.

Oh so many summer camp memories... but some of the most fun was sneaking into the kitchen for ice cream in the middle of the night.

One night we slept out under the stars and I woke up with firost in my hair - I was cozy in my sleeping bag however. Fun memories! Thanks for the chance to win.

Awww, it's adorable! What a great kids blanket that technique would make. I'm dying to try it now!

My favorite camp memory-releasing snakes and frogs into the youth leaders cabins. I was the kid that people used to ask NOT to be in charge of!

I didn't go to summer camp as a kid, but my son went for the first time this year he has been home for over a month and still sings the songs he learned there almost every day, to cute :)

What a cute project! And that orange/purple combination looks so great!

I never went to summer camp either, but I was a riding instructor one summer at a horse ranch. It was fun and hot and dirty, and a dream come true for me--I mean, people were PAYING me to play with horses all day long! My favorite thing was early in the morning, when we would go out and bring the horses in from the hills, and seeing the sun rise and the coyotes and owls and rabbits and bobcats, and that quiet you only get out in the country in the very early morning.

my favorite memory is of girl scout camp, when our leader had to back out at the last minute and my dad came instead! it was rare indeed to see a male at camp,
and we were the envy of many troops- mostly because he got up early and made a fire for us to warm up by!

I have never been to summer camp before, but I really enjoyed the challenge of caving one summer with our church youth group.

I really love the colors of 1001 Peeps.

So many summer camp memories. One of my favorites would be being at camp with both my sisters. It was just so fun for the 3 of us to be together away from home.

I wouldn't say that it is my favorite memory, but my most memorable...My second time at Girl Scout camp in CO I bunked with three other girls. Two would cry from being home sick and I never understood why. Being from a family of 5 kids it was amazing not to have siblings always messing with your stuff. As an adult I now get it, I at strange moments miss my family. Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite part of summer camp was making all sorts of new friends. I loved meeting all different kinds of people.

What a lovely project. Thanks so much for sharing it!

I went to summer camp every summer from age 7 until high school (when I had to get a summer job instead), and I have tons of memories, but one thing that seems to be a consistent thread running through all of them is the singing. I love to sing (although I'm not terribly good at it!), and the songs from those years are still clear in my mind, and I can still sing them all, word for word. My sister and I still sing them when we're together and in a goofy mood!

I never went to summer camp, but I did take driver's ed. in summer school one year. With the sweatiest. football. coach. Ever.

The worst part was, he always wore short shorts and the car had leatherette bench seats. Yuck!

Thanks for the chance to win! It would certainly make the memory of that summer a lot less painful. lolol

I have never had the chance to go to summer camp either but my kids go to several each summer. This is the perfect weight cover for this hot Texas weather. So cute and I love the colors!!

My favorite memory from summer camp was when we were finished eating in the dining hall (it was a sunny and perfect day!) we were walking back to our cabin and it just started to downpour. We all just played around in the rain because we were already soaked!

My favorite summer camp wasn't really a camp. It was getting to spend a week at my grandmother's house. I couldn't wait for summer to come. My visit was usually accompanied with my younger sister so it was extra special when I got to spend a week all by myself one summer. There wasn't much to do for a young girl but I do remember pretending that with a little rope, the front porch rail became my trusty steed!! Those were the days!!!

Unknown said...

I went to band camp and church camp, but I'd rather tell you my favorite summer memory of something else. The recent drought here in New Mexico has made me miss the summer days of my grandmother's garden, when they would water for what felt like hours, and the dirt rows between the numerous rows of tomato plants would get soooo muddy...perfect for squishing your toes in. I miss mud. But I don't miss hulling all those purple hull peas she grew!!!

tina said...

Really easy and cute too! If the back was flannel it would be even better to me.

Nan said...

love the colors, camp was with my church group, we trapped some boys in the outhouse for a couple hours as it was posted they were not to be there. When we let them out they high tailed it out of the area. Girls can get revenge. It was so funny though.

I love this quilt. It looks like one I can actually finish.

I loved going to camp every year. My favorite memories are going to Oklahoma with my best friends grandma's church. We would meet so many new people and make so many friends.

Ok I'll comment! If I win I will give the peeps to my buddy JE who loves them. I hated summer camp. I was the kid hiding in her tent reading a book. Or sneaking into the craft cabin when it was time for outdoor activities! Thanks for all you guys do!

I would love to win! Cute! I got into quilting when my son was first born. He turns 3 in Sept and I'll have made 15 quilts I think. It's so fun!
My favorite camping experience was definitely when I was a Girl Scout growing up in CA. I got to go to the Diamond Jubilee for a week and take a wet wipe shower in a tent every morning. It was such an adventure. We made little tags that we traded with other troops wherever we went and did activities the whole week. At night, they would have concerts. I was in 5th grade and not into music. When we got home, I told my parents Ozzy Osborne or someone performed. They freaked out and then asked more about it. I said that he sang some song and girls started fainting. The song was Puppy something. They then figured out it was Donny Osmund, not Ozzy! :) I remember a lot of my camping trips and they were always so much fun!

This is a great quilt, cannot wait to make it!
Having never went to summer camp, I, of course, wanted to remedy the situation with my own daughter so packed her off to Girl Scout Horse Camp. This child to this day absolutely hates going to the bathroom anywhere EXCEPT her own bathroom or ours (she's 36!) so I can honestly say it was quite traumatic for her to tee-tee in the latrines. Oh Well, another parenting misadventure, I had several in those years, so I try to make up with the grandchildren!

I've never been to summer camp, but I was a counselor at a day camp for two summers. I still laugh when I think about one of our "pudgier" campers... one morning, right after he arrived he asked what we were eating for lunch. Not satisfied with the answer (it was spaghetti or something...), he let out a huge sad sigh and in exasperation asked "well, what's for lunch tomorrow?".

My best memories of Summer Camp is camping at an old mansion called Casa Mare with the Girl Scouts - they had all kinds of ghost stories that were told about the old house - that was one scary place at night!

I love that throw!

Best summer camp memory was when I went to Girl Scout horse camp for a week at Camp Winacka in San Diego, CA. Spending the week with other girls who were as crazy about horses as I was, mucking stalls, going on trail rides, it was wonderful. 30yrs later I still remember the camp's namesake song!

I think my favorite memory of summer camp was actually after camp when you started receiving latter from your 'pen-pals' or new friends from camp. As a kid i loooooooved receiving mail, actually I still do but now its all bills, not nearly as fun!
